Paula Coulthard Bio
Paula graduated with BFA in Sculpture at Canterbury University. She enjoyed a successful career in the film and television industry in art department and wardrobe prior to establishing COULTHARD in 2003.
COULTHARD clothing and homeware is made from natural fibres such as wool, silk, linen, hemp and cotton. All designs are either one off pieces or small runs to protect the integrity of her work.
With the COULTHARD brand, Paula explores the possibilities of fashion and design as art. In 2007, along with co-designer Ursula Dixon, she won the supreme prize in The World of Wearable Art awards, with "Rattle your Dags".
With a strong interest in history and art, COULTHARD endeavors to capture the pioneering spirit and rugged beauty of New Zealand and its people.
A sense of time and memory are integral to the work through the use of found materials and aged fabrics and buttons.
Paula's latest venture is a new furniture brand UNION, established with Sue Haldane of the Boiler Room in 2008.
